Frostbite series lives up to its name PDF Print E-mail

Our last series for the year is called the Frostbite series. There was no frost this Sunday but I can confirm it was perishing -
my feet are only just thawing out as I write.

This being the penultimate Sunday of the series it looks like Tony Cook has enough high places overall to have secured the top series place even if he came last (which is unlikely). However it is all up for grabs after that. Sunday morning saw the high overnight winds continuing - initial thoughts being 'no way am I sailing in that', but by race start it had moderated to a force 3 though still with some bigger gusts. A good start was made by all boats. The heavy gusts saw crews working hard to stay in, let alone stay flat. The first run saw the Mirror Miracle of John Main get picked up by a gust and send him swimming; in his enthusiasm to get back upright his centre board came off in his hand - Oops! While the safety boat was helping to sort out John the Knox family (father and son) also went bathing. Not to be outdone, Tony Cook also tried out his new dry suit. Moral - he who stays sail side up wins. Charles Morrish and Alison Geddes in the Enterprise came in first, followed by the rest: 2nd Tony Cook (Laser), 3rd Garry Rucklidge & Duncan Brown (Wayfarer), 4th Graeme Knox (Laser). Craig Knox stuck at it, coping with the heavy gusts which overpowered him on several occasions to finish a creditable 5th.

By race 2 the wind had moderated slightly enabling a more considered approach to tactics. But Tony Cook's cunning plan came to nought as his course near the bank saw less wind strength allowing the Enterprise of Chalres and Alison to overtake him at the mark. Tony kept close on their stern with only a boat length between them until the fickle winds of Forfar saw the Enterprise draw away whilst he was left bobbing in their wake. 1st were Charles Morrish & Alison Geddes (Enterprise) in a convincing end to this season's sailing for them. Tony Cook held onto 2nd place and without capsizing Graeme Knox was able to stay in front of the Garry an Duncan in their Wayfarer to take 3rd with Craig Knox again coming home in fifth place.
